Every now and then life deserves to have a few touches of luxury and extravagance and what better way than to book a 5 star hotel.
Whilst staying in Santa Monica in California we did exactly that and checked in to The Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows.

Located on Sunset Boulevard the Fairmont hotel is in the perfect location to explore Santa Monica with the pier, beach, shops and restaurants all being just a short 5 minute walk away. Upon arrival you can immediately tell that the hotel is a little more upmarket than most with a marble tile finish and well maintained solid wood counters.
Booking.comDouble Bedroom
We received a warm welcome, were checked in quickly and then whisked off to our room which was a standard double. First impressions of our room were good, it was clean, tidy, warm and inviting. The bed was comfy and there were several pillow choices in the large mirrored wardrobe.

On the desk the hotel had left a welcome note which was a nice touch.

Alongside the welcome note was an ice cold bottle of prosecco! I had informed the hotel in advance that our stay was for a special occasion and at no extra cost this had been left in our room, perfect!

Wandering around the hotel you find all of the usual facilities however one thing that was great about the Miramar was that not only was the gym inside but there was also an outdoor gym space. If you don’t fancy doing your workout down at Muscle Beach in front of an audience this is perfect!
Swimming Pool
The swimming pool is located just outside The Fig restaurant and as you would expect in Santa Monica, is surrounded by tall palm trees and well manicured lawns.

The entire pool area is immaculate – clean, tidy, well maintained and inviting. All of the sunbeds receive good amounts of sunlight (the photo above was taken around 8am) so if you are a sun worshipper you’ll have no problems topping up your tan!

To add a little calm and tranquility to the space there is a beautiful rockery next to the pool with water cascading down layered rocks.

This water falls into a pond where you’ll find some beautiful and friendly koi carp swimming around.

Room Service
When staying abroad we tend to find that there’s always an evening where you either return from a day out too late to go out for dinner or someone falls ill. In these instances room service is perfect!
The Miramar Hotel & Bungalows offers a separate room service menu to the hotel restaurant which contains simple dishes. We decided to order room service one evening and opted for some burgers. They turned up very quickly, nicely presented on a table with a flower. The food was simple but it tasted great.

The Fig Restaurant
The Fig restaurant is located within the hotel and offers some of the best food we tasted in America. The restaurant is beautifully lit, spacious and volumes are fairly muted so you’ll be able to easily enjoy a good conversation with your family/friends.
If there is one recommendation we would make about The Fig it is to try their almond pancakes, they’re to die for!

The Fig is an incredibly popular restaurant due to its reputation so if you are planning to eat here be sure to make a reservation in advance to avoid missing out.
