Visiting The Sun Voyager Viking Boat Sculpture in Reykjavik

In recent years the lure of Reykjavik in Iceland as a travel destination has grown. Not because it has become cheaper (it’s still incredibly expensive here), but largely down to Iceland entering popular culture through shows like Game of Thrones which has spent a huge amount of time filming here.

As a small island Iceland is home to around 337k people (2016) with just over 200k of them living in the capital, Reykjavik. This makes Reykjavik a real hub of activity with plenty going on and lots of things to do and see. During our last trip to Iceland we explored this amazing city with one of our first stops being at the The Sun Voyager Viking Boat sculpture.

The Sun Voyager Viking Boat Sculpture, Reykjavik

Reykjavik’s 200th anniversary

Designed by Jón Gunnar Árnason the Sun Voyager is made of stainless steel and originates from 1986. Reykjavik ran a competition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city and wanted a sculpture created that would create a point of interest. The Sun Voyager was the winning design and was turned from a simple concept into a reality on the sea wall, unveiled on 18th August 1990, Reykjavik’s 200th anniversary.

Where to find the Sun Voyager

The Sun Voyager is located on the shore walk parallel to sea wall on Sæbraut in the North West of the city. Walking from Reykjavik city centre to the Sun Voyager is really quick and easy, taking only around 10 minutes. It is therefore something that is well worth your time to go and visit.

Not only does the Sun Voyager offer a point of interest in the city but the views form the sea wall are also quite interesting as there are long an stretching views across the sea to the mountains on the other side.
