Slowing Things Down In The West Village, New York City

The West Village in Manhattan is like no other place in New York City. Forget the high rise sky scrapers and forget the hustle and bustle of one of the World’s largest cities, the West Village is a far more charming place that has held onto its traditions and heritage.

As a neighborhood which is primarily residential, things here are relatively calm. The cobblestone lined streets offer small restaurants, cafes, local shops, and various other services so wherever you wander you will always find another interesting building or street to look at.

When I headed out to New York City last year I dedicated a morning to exploring the West Village before heading across to the High Line (another must-see destination!) and it was well worth the trip! As per many of my photos you really wouldn’t know that you were in New York City based on what you see and hear about the city which makes the area all the more inviting.

Brunch at A.O.C. L’aile ou la Cuisse

Before heading off to explore the rest of the city, I made my way to A.O.C. for a spot of French brunch which was somewhere I’d seen highly rated online before visiting. The food here was fantastic – if you’re planning a visit I would certainly recommend it!

I opted for the Ouefs Nordique…

Whilst Sarah opted for the Pain Perdu…

Both were amazing, enough said.

Having explored various streets, had some food and made the most of what the West Village has to offer to tourists there was only 1 final stop which had to be made. I mean, come on, having grown up for the majority of my 31 years with Friends, seeing their now famous New York City apartment was a compulsory part of the trip! (If you’re visiting, head to 90 Bedford Street, New York, NY 10014).

And that was it! The West Village really is somewhere that you should take the time to go and explore if you’re heading to New York City as there is so much of interest there and it’s a world apart from the rest of the city. Being on a tight schedule with a lot to pack into the day I was only there for around 2 hours so didn’t have too long to check it all out however I did get a pretty good idea of what it has to offer.

  1. Most of the buildings surrounding Washington Square Park belong to the university. In 1831, NYU was founded as the first public university in New York City. It is now a private university with one of the highest tuitions of any university in the country at $41,000 per year! Their School of Law building on the corner of MacDougal Street and Washington Square South is especially lovely. Look for the NYU purple flags everywhere.
